Customs
Travelers are not required to pay duty on an appropriate amount of items for their personal use during their visit. In addition, the following duty-free allowances apply: no more than 1 liter of liquor and 2 liters of wine. Tobacco is prohibited.
Currency Exchange
Banks are typically open from 9:00 am to 3pm Monday-Friday, and may have limited hours on Saturdays. Most banks will not exchange traveler’s checks and those that will generally charge a 5% commission. ATM’s are common in Sofia and in resort towns, but your best bet is to find any one of the many exchange bureau’s your cash will be converted for little to no charge and their hours are extended until 6pm daily, some around the clock!
Tipping
Tipping is new to the Bulgarian culture. It is now customary to tip 10-12% for meals and 10% for taxi drivers (more for shorter rides.) Porters and bellhops are appreciative of 1-2 kona per bag, approximately $1 USD.
Business Hours
Museums - Many are open from 9 am to 5 pm seven days a week. Restaurants - Meals can be ordered up to 11 pm at many local restaurants. Shopping - Shops and stores are generally open from 9/10 am to 7 pm Monday-Friday. Saturdays, shops are generally open from 9 am to 12/1 pm but some could stay open as late as 7 pm.
